(1) WELCOME TO ILLUSIONS ON-DISK MANUAL
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This chapter covers : HOW TO USE THIS DOCUMENT READER
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ILLUSIONS - THE BASIC FACTS
HOW TO USE THE MENU SYSTEM
WHAT TO DO FIRST
HOW TO USE THIS DOCUMENT READER
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To scroll the text that you are reading now, simply move the mouse
pointer into the lower half of the screen. The whole document will
begin to scroll. Similarly, by moving the pointer into the top half of
the screen, you can go backwards. Easy or what?
To return to the main menu at ANY time, all you have to do is click
the RIGHT mouse button. That's all there is to it!
THE BASIC FACTS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There is no doubt about it, ILLUSIONS uses a menu system that many
people find difficult to get used to. But in actual fact, it's just
simple logic: Left button = select, Right button = Menu. Easy!
Everything is done using the mouse. Apart from entering text into
file selectors for loading/saving images, you do not have to touch the
keyboard at all.
At your disposal are 32 different colours - sixteen of these are set
to rotate continuously, while the other sixteen are "fixed" and will
draw pure, non-moving colour. ILLUSIONS allows you to draw in both
animated colour, and non-animated colour - a bit like super-imposure.
The results, after a bit of experiment and practice, can be really
spectacular - stuff that will make your grandma's false teeth drop out
in amazement.
For SIX instant example pictures, simply click on the DISK icon on
the main menu (to bring up the disabled LOAD/SAVE screen) then find
the small black icons labeled "PIC" (1-6). Simply click on one of
these icons to load up a different example picture!
WORKING THE PROGRAM
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Apart from the deceptively small MAIN MENU (which appears upon
booting with "ILLUSIONS"stamped on it), almost every other 'sub' menu
vanishes if your mouse pointer moves off it. This is perfectly normal
and after a bit of doodling, I'm sure you'll agree, very practical.
When the menu has gone, you can activate whatever feature you have
selected on your drawing by pressing the LEFT button. And when you've
done, naturally, you press the RIGHT button to get back to the menu.
"OH GOD", you think at this stage, when a menu full of rainbow and
animated colour arrives in front of your face. "This is getting
confusing". No, it's not. Simply hit the RIGHT button again, and
you'll recognise the next menu that appears.
To get down to a more simple explanation, have a gander at this
little table of mouse clicks:
------------------------------------------------------
MENU LEFT MOUSE RIGHT MOUSE
------------------------------------------------------
Main Menu Select a Sub Menu -
Sub Menu Select a feature -
Drawing Screen Activate feature Colour Menu
Colour Menu Choose a colour Sub Menu
------------------------------------------------------
And to confuse you even more, to get back to the main menu from a sub
menu, you have to click on the little ARROW in the top left hand
corner. I knew you'd love that.
SELECTING INK COLOUR
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The COLOUR menu is perhaps the most used of all ILLUSIONS menus. You
will see that there are a selection of nice rainbow colours, and a
very well-matched tone of 'animating' or CYCLING colours.
Clicking on a colour instantly selects it - a bar at the bottom will
change to prove this. To chose cycling ink (or animated ink, as I
prefer to call it because I like the sound) just click on ANY of the
moving colours. The bar of colour at the bottom of the menu will begin
to flash - this is perfectly normal, and indicates you have indeed
selected the current animated ink colour.
Once you've figured this out - there's little left I can tell you.
Experimentation is the best way to get to grips with the program. I
have included chapter 6 of the manual which covers colour cycling and
mixing colours.
Note that the fully registered version contains a 10-chapter manual
complete with tables, charts and very useful information such as:
* Installing "ILLUSIONS" on your hard disk.
* Loading and saving IFF screens.
* Overcoming colour-cycling problems.
* ARTISTIX enhancements
(Apology: ILLUSIONS does NOT contain any screen print options).
